It is nothing new that we, being people, repeat things that we find great and get inspiration from. Be it fashion, art or music! Songs are covered or quite simply brazenly stolen or well-known old melodies are mixed into new songs and reinterpreted. We have 4 songs for you here where you would have NEVER guessed that the artists were inspired by very old or even still relatively new songs.
1. Britney Spears „Toxic“ (2003)
“Toxic” was THE song of the summer 2003. Britney Spears was not only No. 1 of the charts for weeks on end; she even won her first Grammy for best song with the hit. No wonder, this song was celebrated in its original version and considered to be very innovative and trend setting for the future at that time. But wait a minute… Britney’s producers let themselves be inspired by a BOLLYWOOD SONG of the year 1981. The song “Ek Duje Ke Liye” was a huge hit in India. But not in the USA, which is probably what the producers thought when they sampled the instrumental for Spears’ song. Originally packaged!
2. Camila Cabello „Crying In The Club“ (2017)
For many years, Camila Cabello was a member of the band FIFTH HARMONY that was founded in 2012. Globally, they sold more than 15 million albums making them the most successful girl band since the Spice Girls. Camila left the band on her own wishes in late 2016 and launched her solo career in 2017. Just a few weeks ago, her debut single “Crying In The Club” made its premiere and the inspirational source is quite obvious in the song: “Genie In A Bottle”. In 1999, Christina Aguilera made her musical breakthrough with this song. Not a bad source, Camila might have thought and used a few passages of the Aguilera song for the chorus.
3. Katy Perry „Swish Swish“ (2017)
Katy Perry is having her great comeback just now! There hasn’t been a song from her in three years. This is why everyone was waiting in suspense for her comeback single. “Chained to The Rhythm” made it to 3rd place in the charts and the second current single “Swish Swish” is also a big hit right now. But here, the artist and the producer team let themselves be inspired. The song “I Get Deep” by DJ Roland Clark of the year 2000 was the inspirational source and made it 1:1 into Perry’s new song. Why go through the trouble and adjust it a little bit, right?
4. Kanye West „Stronger“ (2007)
Can you still call this song inspired or is it instead a copy? Kanye West conquered the charts in 2007 with his song “Stronger” but many people were quite astonished. The song sounds EXACTLY like the song of the band Daft Punk “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” from the year 2001. Kanye had nothing to say about the accusation that he copied it…
And there you have it again: good things survive the times, regardless of how old they are.
